Archery in Manitoba: The 3D Province

Manitoba has 28 active archery listings. Seventeen of them list a 3D course.

That ratio is the highest of any province in our directory, and it says something real about how archery works here. Manitoba archery is built around bowhunting preparation and 3D competition, not around indoor target lanes. Provincial 3D championships have been hosted at opposite ends of western Manitoba. Clubs put on annual 3D shoots as their marquee event. At least one of them lets you camp on site while you do it.

The provincial range, and the catch

Archery Manitoba Sanford Range, also called the Sanford Archery Park, sits north of Sanford at Ferndale Road and PR 334. It is owned and operated by Archery Manitoba, the provincial sport organization, and it lists a 3D course, a field course and lessons.

Read this part before you drive out: the Sanford Range is not open to general membership or public drop-in shooting. Access is limited to members and guests taking part in partner club activities, practices and sanctioned competitions. Flatlanders Archery Club is the partner club that runs events there, so public access happens through Flatlanders events and organized walk-on shoots rather than by showing up with a bow.

We are spelling that out because a provincial-body range sounds like a public facility and it is not one. Contact Flatlanders first. Clubs wanting to use the range or host a shoot can reach the Archery Manitoba office at 204-925-5697.

Winnipeg

Winnipeg holds eight of the province's 28 listings: two commercial ranges with pro shops, a women-only club, a club on a military base, and three Belgian pole archery clubs that shoot straight up at wooden birds on a mast. It is a strange and excellent archery city, and it has its own full guide on this site.

The short version for planning purposes. Heights Outdoors and Archery Range on Portage Avenue is 26 lanes at 20 yards with drop-in at $14.00 an hour. Heartland Archery is a 20-yard range with a bowhunting pro shop at $12.00 an hour. Those are the two places in Winnipeg where you can walk in, rent a bow and shoot today.

17 Wing Archery Club at CFB Winnipeg shoots year round, indoors September to May and outdoors through the summer, and is geared toward the Winnipeg military community while also carrying civilian members. It is the only Winnipeg listing with a 3D course.

The 3D circuit

Fort La Bosse Wildlife Association in Virden has a 20-metre indoor range for winter and outdoor targets stretching to 80 yards, and it hosted the Manitoba Provincial 3D Championships in 2019 and 2020 at Eternal Springs Park. Eighty yards is the longest outdoor distance listed anywhere in the province.

South Mountain Archery Shooters & Hunters, or SMASH, in Erickson hosted the 2017 Manitoba Provincial 3D Championships. Their outdoor 3D courses are built to mimic bowhunting scenarios, and during major events the club provides free camping for participants. That detail tells you what a Manitoba 3D weekend actually looks like. It is closer to a festival than a tournament.

Northstar Archers in The Pas organises large outdoor 3D tournaments around Clearwater Lake, out of the ski chalet. Northern Manitoba terrain, which is a genuinely different shooting problem from the prairie.

Interlake Archers in Argyle runs 3D tracking courses and field archery setups, and hosts sanctioned 720 Round competitions that operate as Provincial Team Qualifiers. If you are shooting to make a team rather than to enjoy a Saturday, this is the club to know.

Brandon Wildlife Association on 49th Street East has an outdoor archery bay with target butts from 20 to 60 yards, and runs three separate 3D events a year: an indoor 3D shoot in January, an outdoor 3D shoot in June, and a walk-around 3D course through the summer.

Vermillion Archers shoots south of Dauphin at the Selo Ukraina Folk Arts Centre, hosts annual 3D tournaments, moves to the Dauphin Memorial Community Centre for winter shooting, and runs Archery Canada and ABAM sanctioned events.

Shilo Archery Club at CFB Shilo, approximately 35 kilometres east of Brandon, is open to Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans and their families, and organises provincially sanctioned outdoor 3D tournaments.

Prairie Bowhunters in Portage la Prairie meets indoors Tuesday evenings from December through March at the Central Plains RecPlex gymnasium, then hosts an annual outdoor 3D event near Haywood once the weather warms. That indoor-winter, outdoor-summer rhythm is the standard Manitoba club pattern.

Also listing 3D: Asessippi Archery Club in Rossburn, Minnedosa Archery Club out of Strathclair, Roblin Archery Club, Swan Valley Archery Club in Bowsman just north of Swan River, Snake Creek Wildlife in Birtle, Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters, and Flatlanders at Sanford.

Snake Creek is worth its own line. Founded in 1970, roughly 100 active members, affiliated with the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, running indoor and outdoor archery shoots alongside trap and family cookouts. That is what a functioning small-town club looks like when it works.

The north

Thompson Archers meets in the Trojan Gym at Arty Parker Collegiate in Thompson, on a climate-controlled 18-metre range, and trains for and competes in the Manitoba Winter Games. All bow types, youth and adults. In a place with Thompson's winters, a heated 18-metre line is not a convenience, it is the entire season.

Winnipeg River Archers serves the Powerview-Pine Falls area, roughly 130 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, along the Winnipeg River, and is one of only five listings in the province that lists lessons. Northstar Archers in The Pas covers the northwest.

Three clubs is thin coverage for northern Manitoba geographically. But all three exist and all three are affiliated, which is more than most provinces manage north of the population line.

Where you can just walk in

This is the shortest section, and it matters most to beginners.

D & G Family Archery Range at Giroux, serving the Steinbach area, is a family-owned indoor archery range and equipment store operating year round and open to the general public. Come in, shop for gear, shoot on the indoor range. It is the only listing outside Winnipeg with a pro shop.

Beyond that, the walk-in options are Heights Outdoors and Heartland Archery in Winnipeg. Three addresses in the entire province where you can shoot without knowing somebody first.

Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters just north of Winnipeg is the best-documented club membership in the province at $125 a year. Indoors at Harvester Outdoors in winter, outdoor range in East Selkirk for the warmer months, regular Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon shoots, all bow types, and membership includes liability insurance.

The numbers

Across the 28 listings: 17 list a 3D course, three list a field course, five list lessons, three list a pro shop, three list rental equipment, and 25 require membership.

Read that as a shape rather than a scorecard. Manitoba is a province of member clubs organised around 3D and bowhunting, with a small commercial layer in Winnipeg and Steinbach and a provincial body sitting behind it. Amenity fields that read blank usually mean nobody has verified them yet rather than that the club lacks them, so treat the positives above as confirmed and the gaps as unknown.

How to start here

Never shot before, near Winnipeg or Steinbach: walk into Heights, Heartland or D & G and rent a bow. That is the whole first step.

Anywhere else in Manitoba: find your nearest club on this list and email them. Twenty-five of the 28 are member clubs, and rural clubs almost always have loaner gear and someone willing to stand behind you for an evening. Ask about their annual 3D shoot while you are at it, because that is when clubs are most welcoming to newcomers.

Already shooting and want competition: Interlake Archers for the 720 Round qualifiers, or the 3D circuit through Fort La Bosse, SMASH and Northstar.

Want the strangest thing archery in Canada has to offer: the pole clubs in Winnipeg's St. Boniface. Robin Hood Pole Archery, established in 1929, shoots at 37 bird targets mounted atop a 110-foot pole on Wednesday evenings from late April to early September. St. Sebastian, founded in 1926, shares the same grounds. There is nothing else like it in the country.
