Archery on Prince Edward Island: The Short List

Prince Edward Island has three active archery listings. That is the whole province.

Most range guides would try to pad that out. There is no point. Three is a number you can hold in your head, and the useful thing about a province this size is that the guide can actually be complete — you are not choosing from a shortlist of a longer list, you are looking at every option there is. What is more surprising is how much ground those three cover between them: a nationally certified indoor training centre that has hosted a Canadian championship, a horseback archery operation, and a county club.

Cass' Creek Archery Club, Covehead

Cass' Creek Archery Club at 2225 Covehead Road is the serious facility on the Island and, by a distance, the place most people should start.

It is owned and operated by nationally certified coach Duncan Crawford, and it runs an eight-target indoor range shooting out to 20 yards, with stated plans to expand to 16 lanes. It carries a pro shop, rental equipment and lessons, and it has both a 3D course and a field course. That combination — indoor lanes, 3D, field, pro shop, rentals and coaching in one place — does not exist anywhere else in the province, and it is rare anywhere in Atlantic Canada.

The track record backs it up. The club hosted the 2018 PEI Provincial Championships and the 2022 Canadian Outdoor Championships. It was rebuilt after a fire in 2017. They run a six-week beginner course, which is the structured entry point on the Island.

Membership is required. If you live anywhere between Charlottetown and the north shore, this is a fifteen-minute problem to solve rather than a real one, and it is the single most complete archery facility on Prince Edward Island.

Elemental Acres Horse Archery, Farmington

Elemental Acres Horse Archery at 3632 Veterans Memorial Highway is the one that surprises people. It offers both ground archery and mounted archery — shooting a traditional bow from horseback — with CFMA-certified instructors Emma and Marina running the sessions.

The pricing is published and unusually clear. Ground archery starts at $50 per hour for groups. Mounted archery begins at $75 per hour with a two-hour minimum. The Iron Horse Archers club meets on the first and third Saturdays from May onward at $60 per session. Group packages accommodate up to nine people. Rental equipment and lessons are both available, and the annual membership figure listed is $60.

Two things worth saying plainly about this. First, it is traditional bows only — this is not where you take a compound with a sight. Second, mounted archery at $75 an hour with a two-hour minimum is not a cheap afternoon, and it should not be your first experience of the sport if you have never drawn a bow. Learn to shoot standing still first. Then come back, because there are only a handful of places in Canada that do this and one of them is on Prince Edward Island.

For groups, birthdays, or a genuinely memorable thing to do on a visit to the Island, the ground archery option at $50 an hour is a straightforward booking.

Central Queen's Archery Club, Hunter River

Central Queen's Archery Club serves the central Queens County area and is registered with Archery Canada under club number PE542. It welcomes all bow types, requires membership, and the listing directs you to contact them by email for membership details.

We do not publish facility details for this club because we do not have them confirmed, and we would rather leave a field blank than fill it with something plausible. What we can tell you is that the registration is real and current — a club number with Archery Canada means the club is part of the national body, carries the associated insurance framework, and its members can shoot registered rounds. Email them and ask about session times.

What three listings actually means for you

Being honest about a thin province is more useful than dressing it up.

Two of the three list lessons and two list rental equipment, which is a better beginner ratio than most provinces with ten times the listings. One has a pro shop, one has a 3D course, one has a field course, and in every case that one is Cass' Creek. If you want to shoot 3D on the Island, there is exactly one place, and it is in Covehead.

All three require membership. There is no walk-in, pay-by-the-hour archery range on Prince Edward Island in the way there is in Halifax or Fredericton. The closest thing to a casual booking is a ground archery hour at Elemental Acres.

The other honest note: the Island is small enough that geography is not really a constraint. Covehead to Hunter River to Farmington covers most of central PEI, and no point on the Island is a long drive from at least one of them. In a bigger province the answer to "which one" is usually "whichever is closest." Here it is genuinely "whichever suits what you want to do."

What to do first

If you have never shot: the six-week beginner course at Cass' Creek. It is the only structured beginner programme on the Island and it is run by a nationally certified coach.

If you want a one-off experience with friends or family: ground archery at Elemental Acres, $50 an hour for a group, up to nine people.

If you already shoot and you are moving to the Island: join Cass' Creek for the facility, and email Central Queen's if you are in that part of Queens County.

If you want to shoot from a horse: there is one address in the province and it is Farmington.

A note on what is missing

Three listings for an entire province is thin, and some of that is almost certainly our data rather than the Island's reality. Small clubs that shoot out of a school gym or a rod and gun club on a Tuesday night are the hardest thing in the country for a directory to find, because they have no website and no reason to want one.
